My Weakness is the next taste of what's to come on Ella Thompson's forthcoming album Triumph & Sadness, released via Mr Bongo.
One of the leading voices in contemporary soul, the Naarm/Melbourne-based songwriter, musician, and vocalist serves up an introspective soul number doused in rising horns, hazy, lean-back guitars, and her unmistakable vocals. Featuring a selection of Naarm's finest, including members of Surprise Chef and Karate Boogaloo, the track has echoes of greats gone by but a flavor that is unquestionably Ella.
Thematically, "My Weakness" draws on the myth of Narcissus, questioning the cycles of recognition and unsated longing built into life under capitalism. Like Caravaggio's Narcissus, we are transfixed by our own reflection, unable to look away. As with the rest of the album, Liam McGorry from Temporary Blessings joins Ella as co-writer and co-producer of the track. Musically, it's a swaggy, timeless deep-soul cut. Triumphant horns, a hypnotic guitar hook, and Ella's incredible voice all urge a different way forward.
On the theme of the song, Ella mentions, "Attention becomes a painkiller. A figure stares into a pool not out of love, but out of entrapment, incapable of averting its gaze. Sometimes the most powerful ripple begins with a quiet drop in the pool of self-reflection. Dissatisfaction is not accidental; it is the engine driven by longing, sustained by denial. Capitalism depends on desires it can never fully satisfy. Yet there can be a strange relief in that helplessness, a perverse comfort in naming the trap while staying in it, as if knowing excuses us from acting."
