Wolter Waltz by BABON
The ever-evolving musical universe of BABON hits another milestone with their latest single, Wolter Waltz.
The final single before the release of Indonesian instrumental jazz outfit BABON's debut LP "Tropical Desert" (out September 26th on Wonderwheel Recordings), "Wolter Waltz" is a fantastically atmospheric and cinematic instrumental piece.
"Wolter Waltz" is BABON's interpretation and tribute to one of Indonesia’s revolutionary heroes, Wolter Monginsidi. While many in Jakarta may recognize his name from shops, restaurants, and trendy spots, few know the deeper story behind it.
Through this composition, BABON peels back the layers of familiarity and reveals a more human and complex narrative. The waltz, a dance marked by elegance and tension, mirrors the struggle, luck, and resilience required to resist oppression and fight for independence. As the music builds in intensity, the track ends with three gunshots, symbolizing the tragic end of his life and the ultimate sacrifice he made for freedom.
BABON is an instrumental band from Indonesia consisting of Rayi, Wahyudi, and Rori. Their sound weaves traditional Indonesian genres such as keroncong and dangdut with Western and world music influences, such as Middle Eastern grooves and Afro-Funk. BABON’s songs tell stories of environmental degradation and its inherent human drama. In a live setting, the band expands to a 7-piece. They describe the fusion of their unique sound and environmentally fuelled imagery as 'Tropical Desert' music.
