AVNU is the Next Caller
Ellum Audio regular AVNU is back to kick off the New Year with a superb single, Next Caller, that comes with a remix from Raxon.
AVNU has become a mainstay on Maceo Plex's imprint, having released a full-length album here in 2022, collaborated with the boss last year, and continued to serve up fresh solo singles. He is based on the East Coast of Scotland and does it all, from house to techno to electro, with a unique sense of character that makes his tunes stand out.
That is the case here with the brilliant "Next Caller" which starts with the sound of an old-school phone ringing out before heavy kick drums set a groove in motion. It's a slow-burning and hypnotic one that comes alive with ever more wild synth lines that spray about the mix next to wonky pads and sawtooth bass. Spoken words add extra character to this most original of anthems.
Egyptian producer and remixer Raxon also has close ties to this label, having appeared here several times before. He has a rich signature sound that is laid bare again here as he fantastically flips "Next Caller." It is more freaky and unhinged than the original, thanks to the spooky synth patterns that dart about over the chunky drum funk. The original's rasping bassline remains to ensure plenty of big reactions in the club.
