Cosmic Sonic by Cailín

Waterford-native Cailín is a key figure in the Irish techno scene. The longtime Subject resident and vinyl devotee has a rep that has seen her drop two Boiler Room sets, play for the likes of Tresor and Ben Sims' Machine, and run her own Ťechnique night and newly minted Frequency Architecture label. Following 2025's "Afterlife" EP for Frequency Architecture, the label's second release arrives in the form of "Cosmic Sonic," an LP that has allowed the DJ/Producer to experiment outside of the confines of the club, while very much retaining the DNA of her machine-driven sound.

From the opening title track of "Cosmic Sonic," there's a brooding atmosphere paired with a comforting warmth, a characteristic hugely valued by Cailín, a die-hard vinyl DJ. It's five tracks in before we hear a kick, with the dubby, ponderous "Against the Grain" providing a heady, eyes-closed moment that gently builds out of the previous tracks, only for "6R4" to deliver a tougher, dischordant counterpoint immediately after. While the drums continue, the rest of "Cosmic Sonic" doesn't rely on percussion; instead, it uses it to contribute to the atmosphere, which veers from sub-aquatic Detroit references to jagged minimalism.

Cailín earned her DJ stripes the old school way. Now, her forays into production reveal a similar ethos: that of a studio artist willing to eschew trends and forge her own path while staying true to techno's roots.
