Devil's Bridge by Will Barnes Quartet

UK jazz guitarist and composer Will Barnes and his talented Quartet return with Devil's Bridge, the first single to be taken from the forthcoming album Outside the Light.

Named after the Devil's Bridge Waterfalls at Pontarfynach, Ceredigion, this piece showcases a particularly devilish bridge section. Legend says that the oldest of the three bridges was built by the devil himself, in exchange for the soul of the first being to cross. A local peasant woman tricked him by throwing a loaf of bread across the deep gorge, which her dutiful dog chased across the bridge.

Following the success of their debut album "Source of the Severn," the Will Barnes Quartet returns with "Outside the Light," a bold new collection of original jazz compositions. Drawing inspiration from local folklore and Celtic mythology, the album explores themes of light, seasons, and changing landscapes. Featuring pianist Jack Gonsalez, bassist Aidan Thorne, and drummer James Batten, the quartet is known for its tight interplay and dynamic live performances. With acclaim from MOJO and The Jazz Mann, this tour offers an evening of contemporary jazz that's both heartfelt and compelling.

The Will Barnes Quartet consists of Will Barnes (guitar), joined by James Batten (drums), Jack Gonsalez (piano), and Clovis Phillips (bass) - a tight collective of experienced jazz instrumentalists from rural Wales. Presenting songs from their acclaimed debut album, "Source of the Severn," an exploration of the rugged landscape of Mid Wales and the Marches. Expect music that reflects the rural isolation of their home with roots that penetrate bebop, post-bop, and contemporary jazz. Original compositions are punctuated by inventive reworkings of pop, rock, and jazz standards for an eclectic evening of improvised music.
