Hernan Cattaneo & Mercurio journey through the cosmos on the timeless new EP, 2009, for Last Night on Earth.

Progressive house legend Hernán Cattáneo is one of the world's most travelled DJs. A hero in his Argentine homeland and someone who has released countless seminal mix CDs, he remains right at the forefront of the scene with a sound always steeped in rich synth craft and soul-stirring emotion. Here he works with countryman Mercurio, aka musician, guitar player, and producer Esteban Battilana, who has spent more than a decade exploring his own house and tech sound, not least in collaboration with Cattaneo on Cercle Records back in 2022. Mercurio has also remixed the likes of Bjork and U2 and performed on the world's top stages alongside DJs such as Sasha, Nick Warren, and, of course, Hernan Cattaneo.

After following, admirin,g and playing with Sasha for so many years, releasing music on his amazing label is an achievement that I personally rate very highly. It all started while sharing a California tour with Mercurio and thinking how cool this would be one day, both being very big fans of Sasha. Fast forward to MMW and while doing a b2b, I played "2009" and Sasha was asking what it was - That's the moment you think - “YES, we did it”. I think this EP brings the kind of sounds we really like - "2009" is very melodic & uplifting, and "Sepulveda" is a darker grooves trip.

First up, "2009" glides through space with eﬀortless grace while weaving nimble chords and widescreen synths into an immersive soundscape. Progressive drums propel the groove as subtle rushes of euphoria arrive in the twinkling melodies and make it perfect for late-night journeys or transcendent dance floor moments. "Sepulveda" is a brooding, cybernetic soundscape for dystopian daydreams. Underpinned by dark energy and mechanical precision, flickering vocal fragments glitch in and out like corrupted transmissions, and synth stabs bring a comforting glow while the prowling bassline anchors the trip.
