Heartbeat by Peter and Kerry

Peter and Kerry's musical journey has always been defined by raw honesty and a fearless approach to storytelling. Kerry Leatham, a singer, songwriter, musician, and producer from Essex, was raised by a Northern Irish mother and a Dominican father. Peter Lyons, from Southampton, grew up experimenting with tape recorders and hand-me-down instruments. The two met in 2010 when they were individually signed to the revered UK indie label Tape Club Records, bonding over The Simpsons and Fleetwood Mac. That summer, they played in each other's bands, leading to the release of their Clothes, Friends, Photos EP.

Encouraged by support from the BBC and mainstream TV, they continued their collaboration, culminating in their critically acclaimed debut album, La Trimouille, in 2012. After years of touring and pursuing solo projects, they reunited in 2016, only for their momentum to be halted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, after a long hiatus, they return with "You, Me and the Moon" - a record that reflects their maturity, resilience, and artistic evolution.

Their latest single, "Heartbeat," aims at the music industry, drawing from Peter's personal experience as a young artist navigating the complexities of a major record deal. The lyrics expose the disillusionment that often follows, highlighting the industry's politics and the struggles many creatives face. The song's chorus expands the message beyond music, critiquing a world where "fake smiles" and "empty lies" are celebrated with a "cash prize." It serves as a sharp commentary on how selfishness is normalized, particularly in media narratives.

Now signed to Berlin's renowned Sonar Kollektiv, Peter and Kerry are reaching a broader audience while staying true to the dedicated fans who have supported them for over a decade. Musically, they fuse high-end digital production with vintage reel-to-reel machines, 1960s BBC ribbon microphones, phone voice memos, and toy cassette recorders - a nod to Peter's early DIY recording roots.

With "Heartbeat," Peter and Kerry deliver a poignant, unfiltered reflection on the creative world they have navigated. They continue to tour with their latest live band incarnation, bringing both new material and beloved favorites to audiences worldwide. As ever, their music remains deeply personal, fiercely honest, and unapologetically their own.
