The Reef by GUN

GUN (Grim Up North), the new alias of Newcastle mainstay Peter Wilson, aka one-half of People Get Real, debuts on Me Me Me with The Reef EP which also features remixes.

Over many years as People Get Real, Wilson has established himself as one of house and disco's most assured and accomplished DJ and production duos. He has played at various major clubs and festivals globally, has served up a wealth of club-ready weapons on his co-founded Join Our Club label, and now branches out with something just as vital under the new alias, GUN.

Opener "El Carbonara" is an eight-minute, acid-laced mind melter. The pressurized drums, warped synths, and jacked-up drums chug along with an inviting rawness that will make a significant impact. First to remix are two of the North East's latest rising stars: Middlesborough's very own REES & Sahar join to significant effect to flip "El Carbonara" into a more unhinged and spaced out track with wonky grooves and tripped out fx.

Next up is the fantastic "The Reef (BeefMix)", a heavy, off-balance house cut with rugged textures, blissed-out pianos for hands in the air moments, and plenty of subtle euphoria in the lush pads. The same tune gets a standout Acid Dub the layers in the 303 and allows it to run wild and take dancers to another level. Fresh off the back of a Beatport Electro Chart-topper, Fall Forward & Grainger once again impress with their remix of "The Reef". Powered by a fat, twisted bassline and with big old-school piano stabs, it is celebratory and uplifting in tasteful and effective ways.

GUN's "Boput" slows things down to a tense and paranoid crawl, crashing hits and drums for a dark atmosphere. Prickly acid, jacked-up percussion, and modulated synths all add fryer color and detail to this backroom classic. Last of all comes a remix from Kiaki, a brand new artist and young talent who will release a full debut on this label later in the year. His version is a leggy and shadowy, industrial-tinged dark disco groove with angular drums and tension in the synths.
